European Evaluation Society newsletter

Dear EES members,

We would like to update you regarding a number of developments which we think should be brought to your attention.

Renew your membership!

If you have not yet renewed your membership and still want to receive all the issues of the 2008 Journals we strongly urge you to renew your membership as soon as possible.

Wanted: institutional members!

EES solicits the membership of your institution. Institutional membership brings with it a number of benefits foremost of which are visibility and recognition in the European and international evaluation communities, as well as up to date access to the latest practices and evolving knowledge in evaluation. Being an institutional member shows that the member organisation is interested in evaluation and in furthering quality evaluative practise, and supports EES in its efforts to promote it.

Specific benefits include a.o. an annual subscription to the four issues of Evaluation: The International Journal of Theory, Research and Practice (up to five copies of each issue can be provided to institutional members on request), on-line access to Evaluation journals, access to the EES website and its forthcoming Members Only portal, access to the EES membership directory, etc.

EES needs new institutional members, so we look forward to welcoming your organisation as an institutional member!

Online access to Evaluation

One of the benefits of membership in EES is a subscription to the journal Evaluation: The International Journal of Theory, Research and Practice, which is published 4 times a year by Sage Publications. We expect the first issue of 2008 to be send out within the next weeks. We are very proud to inform you that from next week on all EES members of good standing are able to get online access to the Evaluation journals on the website of Sage Publications. If you renewed your membership you will receive your log on and your personal password by separate mail.

EES Conference in Lisbon 1-3 October 2008

'Building for the future: Evaluation in governance, development and progress'

preceded by pre-conference training and professional development workshops at 30 September and 1 October

The response out of the field to the Call for submissions' brochure' has been very positive. We are receiving and still expect a large number of contributions. May we kindly remind you that closing date for abstracts is April 1st? Please check the brochure and submit your abstract via the online submission form at www.eesconference.org. The registration form will be open as from March 10th and until May 1st you can profit from the early bird fee!

The Network of Networks Impact Evaluation (NONIE)

The International Organization for Cooperation in Evaluation (IOCE) now represents one of four networks that will oversee the Network of Networks Impact Evaluation (NONIE). Hosted by the World Bank's Independent Evaluation Group, the NONIE coalition is conducting a program of impact evaluation activities aimed at developing a common understanding of the meaning of impact evaluation and approaches to conducting impact evaluation in the promotion of international development effectiveness.

NONIE was originally comprised of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD's) Development Assistance Committee's Evaluation Network, the United Nations Evaluation Group, and the Evaluation Cooperation Group of the international development banks, with plans to name a fourth network that would represent developing countries and be drawn from the regional evaluation associations. The decision to name IOCE as the fourth network was the result of a series of meetings of the IOCE Board and NONIE, followed by a two-day World Bank impact evaluation conference held in January. For more information see the AEA newsletter.

Since EES is a member of IOCE and Burt Perrin has just been elected as IOCE Vice President, this represents one way of connecting EES and its members with international developments in evaluation.

For more information about NONIE, including its background papers on various approaches to impact evaluation, visit their website.

NONIE will be holding its own meeting in Lisbon in conjunction with the EES conference, and is expected as well to be involved in various sessions with respect to impact evaluation.

Let us remind you that EES's statement on methodological diversity in impact evaluation can be found on the EES website. This statement has received considerable positive comment.

The International Initiative for Impact Evaluation

The International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) is a new international organization which will promote quality impact evaluations on enduring questions of policy relevance to developing country policy makers. From time to time 3ie will send out emails about its activities or other information relating to impact evaluation, or solicit views to help 3ie in its work. We may post from time to time on the EES website information by and about 3IE, including requests for feedback and information about how to learn more about 3IE and its development.

Many thanks,

Burt Perrin

EES General Secretary
